Looking Back – Aug. 26

Along the edge of the White River Dam below Tipton Bridge, Carl Miske and Virgil Taylor of the Riverfront Cleanup Committee of the Chamber of Commerce Environmental Council shove small sections of trees over the edge and on downstream after a final summer effort on Aug. 26, 1974, to clear fallen logs and limbs from the river.

The Columbus North High School boys tennis team defeated Plainfield 4-1 in their match at the Columbus North tennis courts. North senior Anthony Sanders defeated Plainfield’s Austin Vuurman 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.

1999

Columbus Regional Hospital held its first Satisfaction Fair, which celebrated success in improving customer satisfaction. More than 30 booths were set up at the hospital, offering a fortune teller, popcorn, cotton candy and more.

1974

B. Parker Newsom, Jr. of Columbus was first runner-up in the hog calling contest at the Indiana State Fair. Newsom operated a farm near Clifford with his father, where they had about 100 pigs.
