The Republic was presented with the Gold Baton award by the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic for its support of the arts in the community. The philharmonic presented the award each year to a person, family or business for outstanding support and promotion of the arts.

Columbus’ architecture and art were featured on the front page of Boston-based Christian Science Monitor, a daily newspaper with national circulation. The article was titled “Small-town charm meets big-city buzz.”
1974
Columbus Fire Department collected $256.26 during its Fill the Boot fundraiser, which was donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of America. The donation was made during the annual Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon on WRTV Indianapolis Channel 6.
