Letter: Trump and Project 2025 pose danger to country, Constitution

For 15 years a group of very conservative Republicans have been designing a plan on how they will govern if Donald Trump becomes president. This plan is known as “Project 2025.” The content, which consists of 915 pages, was created by the Heritage Foundation think tank. So far, not all the content has been incorporated into the Republicans’ platform.

The final goal of Project 2025 is to have the entire federal bureaucracy placed under presidential control. This would allow a president to directly implement policies in a number of areas. It proposes for the elimination of thousands of current government employees, who then can be replaced by political employees.

Project 2025 has a plan for their first 180 days after taking control of the government, where they will repeal various policies of the previous administration, and then implement the most urgent parts of their new agenda immediately. But this drastic change will most likely create havoc on how our government functions. Trump has promised several changes after he is elected president. He will renew the big tax cut he gave to the rich and corporations that expires in 2025, which added $8.1 trillion to the deficit in just 4 years. He will allow a very restrictive abortion law in every state. Not believing in climate change, he has promised to reduce spending on the environment. He is planning to deport many immigrants living here back to Mexico — workers we need to fill jobs in certain areas. And yet, Trump continues to say he has no knowledge of Project 2025. But the originators of the plan admit Trump was involved. In addition, Russia and China continue to try to interfere in our election in the attempt to get Trump elected.

Project 2025 is a total deviation from our Constitution. The founders believed Congress should be the most important branch of government and its duties are described in Article One. The executive duties are described in Article Two. But today we are seeing a power grab by Trump and the Republican party to create an authoritarian government as outlined in Project 2025. We have not seen this kind of political divide within our country since the Civil War.

Let’s hope the leaders in our government can come together and defuse this crisis. Our allies around the world depend on a strong America to keep their country strong and safe. If we fail and our republic is lost because of our internal discord, the history books will not be kind to our current generation. And what kind of country will we be leaving for our children? A global study reported that 50 years ago, half the world’s population lived in a democracy, and half lived under an authoritarian rule. But today, 70% of world population lives under authoritarian rule. The direction of America for years to come will be determined by this presidential election.
