COLUMBUS
Ervin “Doug” Adkins, 84, of Columbus, died at 6:40 a.m. on August 27, 2024 at his home. He was born on July 29, 1940, in Wayne, West Virginia, the son of Carl O. Adkins and Lona F. Adkins. He married Joyce Rose on December 20, 2008.
Known for his unwavering affection for auctions and garage sales, Ervin was a collector not just of treasures but also of friendships and memories. A devout attendee of Columbus General Baptist Church, he found solace and joy in gospel singings. Those who knew Ervin were familiar with his passion for canning fresh garden vegetables; an evening spent with him on the porch swing was an invitation to serene reflection and lively conversation. Ervin was a man who never met a stranger; his ability to captivate with words transformed acquaintances into lifelong companions.
The funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 2, 2024 with Brother Jesse Stephens officiating. Calling will be from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Jewell Rittman Family Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at Rest Haven Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Adkins; sons, David (Lisa) Adkins of Thorntown, Indiana, Donnie (Linda) Edwards of Jenkins, Kentucky; daughters, Patricia (Byron) Barnard of Cape Coral, Florida, Jennifer (Craig) Kiser of Columbus, Indiana, and Regina (Greg) Henson of Seymour, Indiana; brothers, Linuel, Larry, Charles Ray, and Harold Gale Adkins; grandchildren, Cortney and Jeff Adkins, Megan Willis, David Barnard, Jessica Garrett, Steven Anderson, Matt Edwards, Kayla Sturgill, Misty Gray, and Christopher Davis; many great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and family.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Wanda (Stephens) Adkins in 2004; his parents, Carl and Lona Adkins; brothers, Carl Wendell and Pearlie Adkins.
Services were entrusted to the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.
