College sports notebook: Gilleys help ISU to season-opening win; Whitley shines in debut

ATLANTA — Cadence Gilley and Chloe Gilley each recorded 15 digs Friday in Indiana State’s season-opening five-set volleyball win against Georgia State.

Chloe, a freshman from Columbus East, also had five assists. Cadence, a junior from East, had three assists and three aces.

Also Friday, Chloe Gilley notched eight digs and two assists, and Cadence Gilley added six digs in a three-set loss to Florida A&M.

On Saturday, Chloe tallied 14 digs, one kill, two blocks and one ace in in a four-set loss to South Dakota State. Cadence added five digs and two assists.

Bennett helps Marian to four wins

NEW ORLEANS — Sarah Bennett recorded three kills, two aces and two digs Friday to help Marian to a three-set win against Loyola (La.).

Bennett, a junior from Columbus North, had six kills, three block assists, four digs and an ace in Friday’s four-set win over Columbia (Mo.)

On Saturday, Bennett notched three kills, a block assist and three digs in a three-set win against Xavier (La.). She added two kills, two solo and four assist blocks and five digs for the Knights (9-1) in a four-set win over Mid-America Nazarene.

Clark helps Bethany to victories

LATROBE, Pa. — Andie Clark recorded one kill, one assist, 13 digs and one ace Friday for Bethany (West Virginia) in a season-opening five-set loss to Rochester Institute.

Clark, a junior from Hauser, notched 11 digs in Friday’s three-set win against Pitt-Greensburg. had five digs and an ace in Saturday’s four-set loss to Franciscan and one kill, four digs and two aces in a three-set win against Hollins.

Whitley notches assists in debut

GREENCASTLE — Aidan Whitley recorded assists on DePauw’s first two goals Sunday in a 5-0 season-opening men’s soccer victory against Berea.

Whitley, a freshman from Columbus North, started and played 61 minutes in his collegiate debut.

Lang scores for Michigan in defeat

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Jenna Lang scored her second goal of the season Sunday, but Michigan came away with a 2-1 women’s soccer loss to Ball State.

Lang, a junior from Columbus North, started and played 69 minutes for the Wolverines (0-5). She also had scored Michigan’s only other goal this year in a 2-1 season-opening loss to Utah Valley on Aug. 15.

Kilbarger-Stumpff runs with Buffaloes

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff finished 21st Friday to help Colorado to a third-place team finish in the Wyoming Invitational.

Kilbarger-Stumpff, a redshirt sophomore from Columbus North, finished in 15 minutes, 39.3 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). He was the No. 4 runner for the Buffaloes.

Russell takes third in Kentucky debut

RICHMOND, Ky. — Will Russell made his University of Kentucky debut on Friday by finishing fourth in the Eastern Kentucky tri meet.

Russell, a sophomore from Columbus North who ran at Xavier last year, ran 16:01 for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). No team scores were kept.

Louisville’s Mateo Mendez, a sophomore from North, finished ninth in 16:16.

Rumsey runs for Boilermakers

VALPARAISO — Katherine Rumsey finished 54th Friday in Purdue’s runner-up finish in the Valparaiso Open.

Rumsey, a junior from Columbus North, finished in 20 minutes, 26.3 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). She was the Boilermakers’ No. 11 runner.
