Columbus woman Kay Shanks was honored with Mill Race Center’s Joan Pearcy Senior Citizen of the Year Award at the Senior Expo. Shanks served more than 10 organizations in Bartholomew County as a volunteer, including United Way, American Red Cross, March of Dimes and Firemen’s Cheer Fund.

1999

The Columbus mayor’s senior advisory council chipped in to help resident Georgia Wilkerson clear out an unkempt drainage ditch that caused flooding on her Jonesville Road property. To thank them, Wilkerson hired a limousine to drive several council members to her house, where they threw a party.

1974

The Republic advertising department submitted six ads to the Outstanding Indiana Advertising Ideas contest at the 25th annual Indiana Newspaper Advertising Conference in Indianapolis, and won the Best Ad award. The award was won by Gary Seegers for his full-page J. Cole men’s store ad.
