Jackson County Fair wins food donation contest

BROWNSTOWN — The Jackson County Fair won what organizers call a friendly competition among Indiana county fairs whose combined efforts raised more than 50 tons of food for Indiana food banks.

This summer, 38 county fairs across the state collected 108,593 pounds of food for more than 50 local food banks in the Stock the Trailer competition presented by Farm Credit Mid-America and sponsored by Rural 1st, Fight Hunger. The total donation set a record, surpassing 100,000 pounds for the first time in the competition’s three-year history, organizers said.

Every participating county fair received a donation to support activities that build future agriculture leaders. Additional prize dollars were given to the top five participating fairs. In total, Farm Credit Mid-America donated more than $30,000 to 4-H county fairs.

The top five participating fairs for the 2024 competition are:

  • First: Jackson County Fair raised 16,300 pounds of food and received $5,000
  • Second: Lake County Fair raised 9,140 pounds of food and received $4,000
  • Third: Miami County Fair raised 7,580 pounds of food and received $3,000
  • Fourth: LaPorte County Fair raised 7,060 pounds of food and received $2,000
  • Fifth: Vanderburgh County Fair raised 6,126 pounds of food and received $1,000
