The Columbus-based Phi chapter of Phi Beta Psi sorority was one of two that joined together last week to present an Indianapolis cancer research doctor a grant check of $74,350.
Dr. Nawal Kassem of the Indiana University Cancer Center received the grant on behalf of the sororities, whose mission includes funding cancer research.
“Kassem was a delight to meet and we fast realized her passion for finding ways to identify individuals that could have the genes for cancer,” said Alpha Aldridge of the local Phi chapter. “Her research is centered on improving outcomes for individuals at higher risk for developing cancer.”
Kassem received one of six grants totaling of $466,100 that the national Phi Beta Psi Sorority awarded.
Aldridge said Kassem spent time with sorority members outlining what grants mean to research doctors who are working to find cures for a known disease, such as cancer. Getting funds early in the process is so very hard to get because everyone wants to back a “proven” research plan.
“It is the early stages of research that can be difficult to find funds to proceed,” Aldridge said. “Phi Beta Psi looks for those doctors that are working to make a difference.”
