William Deryl “Bud” Coombs

COLUMBUS

William Deryl “Bud” Coombs, known affectionately as Bud to all who knew him, lived a life that was as full and vibrant as the skies he so loved to navigate. Born on March 18, 1949, in Columbus, Indiana, Bud’s journey came full circle as he passed away peacefully in the same beloved town on September 10, 2024. His 75 years on this earth were marked by an unwavering dedication to his family, his country, and his community.

Bud’s life was a testament to the power of kindness, generosity, and friendship. He was the cherished son of the late Don Wayne and Anna Pauline Barker Coombs, a devoted husband to Asenath Jewell Coombs for 57 years, and a loving father to Scott Wayne (Charlotte) Coombs, Don Dwain (Lisa) Coombs, and Amy Celeste Coombs-Hood. His legacy continues through his grandchildren Cameron, Christian, Victoria Coombs, Cortney (Tanner) Hagemier, Kayla (Wesley) Whittington, Tanna Coombs (Jake Miller), Justin Coombs, William, Melody, and Harmony Hood, as well as bonus grandchildren Chasen and Christopher, his great-grandchildren, Jaxton, Liam, Mason Hagemier, Asher, Aiden Whittington, and Alani Hatton. Bud also leaves behind his caring brother Christopher (Lori) Coombs as well as many nieces and nephews, and he is preceded in death by his sisters Nikki LaDonna Harden and Kimberly Coombs, and his granddaughter Kelsey Dale Coombs.

After graduating in 1967 from Columbus High School, Bud’s professional life was marked by a remarkable 37 1/2-year tenure as a Journeyman Mechanic at Cummins Engine Company. His work ethic and expertise were matched only by his commitment to his fellow workers and the broader community. Bud’s association involvement extended to his faithful 8-year service in the U.S. Army National Guard, where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a proud member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

An avid outdoorsman, Bud was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, and he found joy in the quiet thrill of hunting and the serene patience of fishing. His passion for flight was not just a hobby but a calling. As a licensed pilot and the proud owner of a Cessna 210 aircraft, Bud used his skills to serve others, flying missionaries to their destinations and spreading goodwill from above.

Bud’s life was a reflection of the inspiring words of Helen Keller: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” He embraced every day as an opportunity to explore, to help, and to connect. His kind and friendly nature was a beacon of light for all who had the pleasure of crossing his path.

The family will be celebrating Bud’s life at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, September 15, 2024, at the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Pastor Travis Stamper officiating. Friends and family may visit with Bud’s family from 4:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Sunday. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution may donate to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the Wounded Warrior Project, or to First Church of the Nazarene.

In every sense, Bud Coombs was a generous soul who lived his life as a daring adventure, filled with love, service, and the joy of giving. His story encourages us all to soar to new heights, to cherish our loved ones, and to make the world a better place through our actions. Bud’s memory will continue to inspire and motivate all who were blessed to know him, as his spirit takes flight into eternity.
