Community leader ready for ‘Mickey at the Moose’ fundraiser Friday

Carla Clark | For The Republic Kevin Lane, of First Fianancial Bank, at right, pulls back the curtain to reveal the 2024 In The Sky participant, Mickey Kim, during the first the Not-So Family Feud fundraiser held by Turning Point at the Commons, Columbus, Ind., Thursday, October 19, 2023.

There must be easier ways to raise money.

But community leader and investment firm partner Mickey Kim is skipping those.

Instead, he’ll spend Friday in predicted 90-degree heat on the roof of local Moose Lodge 398 at 330 Eighth St. in downtown Columbus. And while his mission to raise money for nonprofit Turning Point Domestic Violence Services is a serious one, he’s already nurturing a sense of humor about his day-long stay — and maybe longer visit if frenemies donate enough money to keep him on the roof for a while longer.

“Do you recall scene from (the movie) ”The Hangover” when they find Doug on the roof of Caesars Palace?” Kim asked humorously on Tuesday.

In the movie scene, Doug’s friends had forgotten about him after a prank. But folks hardly can forget Kim, a longtime Turning Point advocate and supporter who will be part of a sizable community gathering from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Moose amid live music, lunch of pulled chicken smoked by the First Financial Bank First Pit Crew on Thompson Furniture Big Green Eggs, dinner of the Moose Lodge’s pizza, beverages from Columbus Coca-Cola and much more — all for donations of any amount to the cause.

There also will be cornhole, children’s activities a live remote from QMIX 107.3 FM radio station, and more.

The happenings are all part of Turning Point’s annual fundraising campaign to boost its work toward the prevention and the elimination of domestic and dating violence.

One donor fund on Friday will be for people donating to bring him down from the roof, preferably by 5 p.m. The other fund will be those donating to keep him on his perch at the facility where its members have long been strong supporters of Turning Point’s shelter.

Kim already has said that, ideally, he would like to raise $100,000 which would be an all-time high, no pun intended, for these annual roof rallies.

To boost the effort, Turning Point supporters decided to jumpstart the fundraising effort by matching the first $40,000 of donations received. So, every $1 contributed (to either pot) will raise $2 for Turning Point.
