Early goal lifts Wildcats past Bull Dogs

Class 3A No. 6 Columbus North allowed Lawrence North only one shot on goal Thursday night.

Unfortunately for the Bull Dogs, the Wildcats connected on that lone shot on goal. They converted a free kick in the second minute of the game and held on to post a 1-0 victory at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex.

“I think they created their own luck,” Columbus North coach Andy Glover said. “They are a hard-working team.”

The Bull Dogs (7-3-1) outshot the Wildcats (8-3) 16-6, putting five shots on goal.

Columbus North had a couple of chances to tie late in the second half. Sam Brown sent a rocket from 30 yards that Lawrence North goalkeeper Guillermo Flogar leaped to tip over the crossbar in the 53rd minute. In the 78th minute, Leo Iorio headed a free kick just over the crossbar.

The Bull Dogs were missing a couple of starters who had received red cards in Friday’s win against Carmel.

“It was not our best performance, to be honest,” Glover said. “Our schedule is full of good teams. (Lawrence North) is a good team, but that was not our best performance. We’re missing some pieces from some unfortunate circumstances and calls that were maybe a little bit out of our control in the match before. But the depth of the team was tested, and I think there’s some emerging players that did their very best to fill the roles of the missing pieces.”

Columbus North will host Terre Haute North on senior day at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Bull Dog and Patriot girls teams will play at noon, followed by the boys’ senior day activities and the boys game.
