Nonpartisan group plans local ‘depolarizing’ session

A national nonpartisan group aimed at “depolarizing” communities is planning an event in Columbus next month.

Braver Angels Indiana will host a “Depolarizing Within” workshop beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at St Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2651 California St., Columbus.

Organizers say the three-hour in-person workshop will be followed by lunch and respectful conversation. The event “teaches participants to look at their own attitudes towards the political ‘other’ and develop strategies for engaging in politics without demonizing the other side,” according to Miles Eddy, co-chair of Better Angels of Monroe County.

According to the organization, “Launched in 2016, Braver Angels is a nonprofit bipartisan citizen’s movement to unify America. By bringing red- and blue-leaning Americans together into a working alliance, Braver Angels is building new ways to talk to one another, participate together in public life, and influence the direction of the nation.

“Indiana Braver Angels began in 2018 with the Red/Blue workshop in Bloomington, Indiana. A local alliance started soon thereafter and is now leading weekly conversations with conservatives and liberals, monthly alliance meetings, and multiple online and in-person skills workshops. New alliances continue to be created across Indiana.”
