MALE

Corbin Johnson // South Decatur senior football player

Johnson carried 20 times for 278 yards, four touchdowns and a 2-point conversion; had two catches for 26 yards; returned two interceptions for touchdowns and had a safety on defense in Friday’s 53-12 win against Southside HomeSchool.

His performance last week: “It was definitely a dominant performance. I didn’t expect to do that. I just go out and play for my team and my coaches and community, nothing special. If something happens like that, it happens. As long as we win is all I care about.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I just listen to music, I pray before a game and sometimes I’ll take a moment to take everything in an focus on what I’m about to do on the field.”

Favorite drink: “Milk”

Favorite food: “Sirloin steak”

Favorite class: “Photography”

Favorite sports team: “Indianapolis Colts”

Favorite athlete: “(Atlanta Falcons running back) Bijan Robinson”

Role model: “My dad (Jack Johnson). He passed away not too long ago. I really looked up to him. He was my biggest motivator. That’s what motivated me this season. I’m playing for him.”

Best advice: “To trust the process and stay consistent because a lot of people give up and don’t see it in the long run. Take all the advice you can. Stay consistent and trust in yourself.”

Athletics goal: “I want to go to college, and I want to make it in some type of professional league, whether it’s Canadian or XFL. I’ll even go overseas if I can.”

If you could travel anywhere: “Spain. I take Spanish, and we learn a lot about the culture. I think it would be great to go over there.”

FEMALE

Avery Baker // Columbus North sophomore soccer player

Avery Baker

Baker netted a goal and an assist in a 5-0 win at Bloomington North and scored a goal in a 1-0 win against Lawrence North and another goal in Saturday’s 3-0 win against Terre Haute North.

Her performance last week: “I worked hard. (Saturday) was so hot. It’s just working together as a team. I’m really proud of how we all work together. Those goals were fun to watch go in.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I listen to music and make sure I get some good food to prepare myself.”

Favorite drink: “Sprite”

Favorite food: “Cheese pizza”

Favorite class: “Right now, I love Physics.”

Favorite sports team: “For the NWSL, I really like watching the San Diego Wave. I also like the Indiana Hoosiers.”

Favorite athlete: “(US Women’s National team and Portland Thorns forward) Sophia Smith”

Role model: “I take a lot of inspiration from my mom (Kelly Baker). She works really hard and is always there for me.”

Best advice: “If you’re in a pickle, be a pickle and ‘dill’ with it. Whatever challenges come your way, just overcome those obstacles.’’’

Athletics goal: “It’s one of my dreams to play soccer in college.”

If you could travel anywhere: “I really want to go to Greece. It’s cute and seems like it would be a fun vacation, especially if I went with my friends.”
