Rock the Block returns Saturday downtown

People dance under Exhibit Columbus installation InterOculus during Exhibit Columbus’ Rock the Block party on the opening weekend of Exhibit Columbus in Columbus, Ind., Saturday, Aug. 26, 2023.

You can shake your groove thing at Landmark Columbus Foundation’s Second Annual Rock the Block: Kaleidoscope from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Fourth and Washington streets under InterOculus in downtown Columbus.

The free, all-ages event is the grand finale of the Heritage Fund’s 2024 “Love Where You Live” Campaign.

Other related events earlier on Saturday include a free concert at 4 p.m. by Miss Americanas, a Taylor Swift tribute band, on the Bartholomew County Public Library Plaza, 536 Fifth St. in downtown Columbus.

The gathering will unite residents and visitors “to celebrate the city’s colorful and vibrant culture and spirit with a night full of dance, music, and community connection,” according to a news release.

Last year’s Rock the Block, organized by Alice Johnson and Sarla Kalsi, attracted hundreds of people from all backgrounds, and filled the surrounding area. Community leaders declared it a substantial success.

Fabiana Costa and Whittney Gaines have organized this year’s get-together with support from the Heritage Fud and the city of Columbus.

Richard McCoy, executive director of Landmark Columbus Foundation, was excited about last year’s attendance and impact. And he’s ready to build upon that.

“Now have another legacy event downtown that can continue for years,” he said.

A number of the performers on the schedule are those who have been seen at events as varied as the Ethnic Expo international festival to Dancing With the Stars Columbus Style.
