* When I was a kid in rural Kentucky, people sometimes mocked anything that seemed a little too cornfield-conceptualized, if you will. No one’s laughing in these modern times of the continued craft beer boom, an era when stalks and stouts go together rather beautifully. Look no further than the Seventh Annual 450 North Corn Maze Beer Fest 2024, where one can get lost, so to speak, in brew, tunes with Three Beards Strummin’ (seen here), food and time with friends — right in the middle of a several-acre cornfield at 450 North Brewing Company, 8111 E. County Road 450 N north of Columbus near Taylorsville on Saturday. Food trucks begin serving at 11 a.m., and the maze opens at 12:30 p.m. Information and tickets: 450northbrewing.com/corn-maze-beer-fest/.

* Just in time for the Halloween season comes Viewpoint Books’ Spooky Speakeasy at 6 p.m. Friday at Chapter Two of the business on Washington St. in downtown Columbus. With local host and paranormal purveyor Matthew Jackson, organizers are calling the event “a booootiful night of food, drinks, and the paranormal.” Jackson will ask, and possibly answer, a timely question: Is the renewed Chapter Two space haunted? Is there even a ghost of a chance of such? Jackson has been involved with such investigations for some time. Information and tickets: 812-376-0778.
