Luke Friend // Columbus North senior football player

Friend went 2 for 2 on field goals and 6 for 6 on extra points Friday to help the Bull Dogs to a 48-24 win at Terre Haute South that wrapped up an outright Conference Indiana title.

His performance last week: “I feel like Jackson Haston and Sam Perry did a good job holding and snapping, so that really helped me out.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I just go through my basic warmup routine.”

Favorite drink: “Gatorade”

Favorite food: “Spicy chicken sandwich from Chick-fil-A”

Favorite class: “Business with Mr. (Scott) Seavers”

Favorite sports team: “Indiana University”

Favorite athlete: “Tiger Woods. He’s a good golfer.”

Role model: “My dad (Victor Friend). He’s always motivated me and tried to make me a better person.”

Best advice: “Try new things. I’m new to football and never knew I would like football, but I love it.”

Athletics goal: “Win sectional.”

If you could travel anywhere: “Bermuda, because my mom’s family is from there.”

Makayla Somers // South Decatur senior volleyball player

Makayla Somers

Somers recorded 33 assists and 16 digs in a semifinal win against North Decatur and led the Cougars with 32 assists and three aces in the final against Morristown to earn MVP honors for the North Decatur Sectional.

Her performance last week: “Every single person on the team performed really strong. We all played our game, and that led to victory on Saturday night.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “Usually before every game, our team will say a prayer. I’ll lead our team in prayer and ask God to watch over us. Then, I’ll say my own personal prayer during the national anthem to watch God to watch over me personally.”

Favorite drink: “Lemonade”

Favorite food: “Mashed potatoes and chicken”

Favorite class: “Biomed”

Favorite sports team: “Purdue volleyball and basketball”

Favorite athlete: “Katie Ledecky”

Role model: “My grandfather (Eugene Nobbe)”

Best advice: “Everything in life will have its challenges, but nothing is impossible without hard work and determination.’’

Athletics goal: “To constantly perform the best that I can perform and push my team to give their best performance.”

If you could travel anywhere: “The Maldives, just because it is a really beautiful place, and I think it would be an amazing experience to be able to go there.”
