Sandi’s Closet, a charity helping people living with dementia, plans fall fundraiser

Sandi’s Closet Inc., a charity that provides free shopping experiences for people living with dementia, is having its fall fundraiser, “To Have and Have Another.”

The event is a cocktail party with Golden Age of Hollywood themes to be held at Helen Haddad Hall, 315 Franklin St., on Thursday, Nov. 7, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for $50.00 at Eventbrite.com, search for Sandi’s Closet.

Founded by Jill Tasker, Sandi’s Closet became a 501(c)(3) charity in 2022. Tasker was inspired by her mother, Sandi Hinshaw, who loved to go shopping and co-owned Victorianna’s in Nashville for several years. Sandi lived with Alzheimer’s disease and, as the disease progressed, being able to shop in actual stores became very challenging.

“One day, I put a bunch of jewelry I got on eBay on a table in my living room and told her my dad was treating her to a shopping spree,” Tasker said. “She was so happy picking out her favorites. When my dad came to pick her up, she showed him what she had chosen and was giddy with excitement. The positive effects we saw each time we did this made me want to try the same thing for other people living with dementia.”

Sandi’s Closet currently serves 15 facilities, such as assisted living, memory care and adult day care, in eight counties. All proceed from “To Have and Have Another” go to supporting Sandi’s Closet events in those facilities and for community events to benefit those still living at home.
