Letter: This election, youth need to vote

From: Steve Schoettmer

I have been working the polls. And it is so heartening to see all of the young voters. Especially the young women, coming in to vote.

Our youth are the ones who will be the most affected by the decisions that are being made.

Decisions that deal with the rich paying their fair share of taxes. Women having the right to make decisions about their own health care. People being able to practice their own religious views.

We need our youth to show up and vote. But we also need them to become active in party politics. Because though Democrats have your interests at heart. We need more of you. We need your energy, your commitment, and your visions.

It was my generation, under Reagan, that cut the top tax bracket on the rich. We told about trickle-down economics. You know, give money to the rich and they will share it.

Yeah, right.

That political decision saw the greatest transfer of wealth in human history. The top 10 percent now control 65% of our nation’s wealth. And they aren’t done yet. If Trump wins this election, he and his team intend to pass a new $5 trillion dollar tax cut… for the rich.

Extreme wealth creates a condition that seems to warp common sense. It creates a need that cannot be satisfied. They have even said they intend to pay for this tax cut by trimming Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

But should we be doing that? Taking from the working class and our youth, and turning it over to the rich few?

I know what my decision is. I know where my votes are going. But what about yours? What about our youth?
