NBA star Dwyane Wade hosts “The Cube” (9 p.m., TBS, TV-14). Based on the hit U.K. game show “Million Pound Cube,” this becomes the latest iteration of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” On “Cube,” competing teams of two will undertake feats of skill and intelligence while locked inside a plexiglass room. As you can imagine, that adds a level of discomfort to the proceedings.
There’s a fine line between “high concept” and downright parody. “The Cube” resembles the spoof show “The Box” featured on the hybrid American-British Showtime comedy “Episodes.” All five seasons are available on Netflix.
On that series, Matt LeBlanc (the “Friends” star playing a broad sendup of himself) feels his acting career slipping away when his agent suggests he host “The Box,” where contestants in transparent glass cubes torture each other to the delight of the audience. Not to give too much away, but after a large payday, it ends rather badly for Matt.
Speaking of torture, the debut episode of “The Cube” runs two hours long.
— Sundance Now begins streaming “Moloch,” a six-part supernatural mystery. Moody, slow-moving and atmospheric, “Moloch” takes place in a coastal industrial city where wind turbines dot the horizon. Both gritty and futuristic, the town has a glass and steel train station called Utopia Towers, where a handsome young commuter rushes up an escalator before spontaneously bursting into flames. That will get your attention.
A media blackout put in place by authorities intrigues fetching young journalist Louise (Marine Vacth). Working as an intern in the fashion end of the paper, she insinuates herself into the story, much to the chagrin of her jealous boss and the tower’s security detail. She’s soon joined by Gabriel (Olivier Gourmet), a therapist whose troubled patient shares harrowing details about the event and its possible cause.
This addictive series was acclaimed at the Cannes Film Festival, winning best screenplay in the television category.
— Paramount+ streams “Infinite,” a new thriller starring Mark Wahlberg as a mental patient whose repressed memories (or is that past lives?) involve espionage and derring-do vital to stopping a plot to end life as we know it. Rife with explosions and gunplay, this is the kind of film that would have had a theatrical release pre-COVID. Help yourself.
— ABC concludes “Rebel” (9 p.m. and 10 p.m., TV-14) with back-to-back episodes, following “The Real Rebel: The Erin Brockovich Story” (8 p.m.).
