Betty Jean Rucker

HOPE, INDIANA

Betty Jean Rucker, 85, a resident of Hope, Indiana, passed from this life Saturday, June 12, 2021, at the home of her grandson, Jason Flora, in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Mrs. Rucker was born July 29, 1935, in Switzerland County, Indiana, the loving daughter of Marion and Mary Alice Martin Oakley. On December 28, 1957, Betty married Donald Eugene Rucker; he preceded her in death June 2, 2015.

A homemaker, Mrs. Rucker worked at the U.S. Shoe Factory in Vevay, Indiana early in life. She enjoyed her attendance at the Parkside Baptist Church in Columbus and the Lewis Creek Baptist Church in Shelby County. She was a former member of the Hope Chapter Order of Eastern Star. Mrs. Rucker was an avid reader, and she enjoyed cooking and her family, especially playing games with her great-grandchildren.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her children, Denise (Ben) Flora of Rock Hill, South Carolina and Kevin Rucker of Hope, Indiana; former daughter-in-law, Lori Bennett of Seymour, Indiana; grandchildren, Jason (Tasia) Flora of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Jennifer (Andrew) Gillespie of Fort Mill, South Carolina, Brittany (Jacob) Flora of London, Ohio, Casey Rucker of Seymour, Indiana, and Michael Rucker (LuLu Mariluz) of Columbus, Indiana; five great-grandchildren; brother, Charles Oakley of Bridgeport, Illinois; sister-in-law, Ruth Rucker of Canaan, Indiana, brother-in-law, Carl Burlew of Columbus, Indiana; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Mrs. Rucker was preceded in death by her parents, Marion and Mary Alice Oakley; her husband, Eugene; brothers, Bobby and Hal Oakley; and her companion, Dick Hatton.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 18, 2021, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street; Dr. William E. Bailey will officiate.

Family and friends may gather for visitation from 11 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Rucker will be laid to rest next to her husband at the Hawcreek Baptist Cemetery near Hope.
