Red Cross seeks blood donors, especially Type O

COLUMBUS, Ind. — The American Red Cross said it is experiencing a severe blood shortage as trauma cases, organ transplants and elective surgeries increase and deplete the nation’s blood inventory. Donors of all blood types, especially Type O, are urged to make an appointment to donate blood.

The Red Cross said hospitals are responding to an atypically high number of traumas and emergency room visits, as well as overdoses and transplants. In comparison to 2019, the agency has seen a demand from trauma centers climb by 10% in 2021, more than five times the growth of other facilities that provide blood transfusions.

To schedule an appointment to give blood, use the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 800-733-2767. Donors who give between now and June 30 will receive a $5 Amazon.com gift card.

Upcoming donation opportunities include:

  • 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, The Commons, 300 Washington St., Columbus.
  • 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 22, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 4850 W. Goeller Road.
