Event to highlight Nixon’s visit to Jennings County

VERNON — This Thursday will mark the 50th anniversary of President Richard Milhous Nixon’s visit to Jennings County, and the public is invited to attend an event to mark the occasion.

The Jennings County Historical Society will host a short program at the North American House in Vernon, 134 Brown St., beginning at 6 p.m.

Nixon came to Jennings County in 1971 to dedicate a marker in honor of his mother’s ancestral home. His mother, Hannah Mulhouse, was born in Jennings on March 7, 1885.

A group led by Karen Chilman worked to restore the original weather-worn marker, and the marker will be dedicated during the program.

The program will include the playing of an audio recording of Nixon’s visit and a display of photographs.

The historical society is especially encouraging anyone who attended the 1971 program to attend and share their memories.

The event is free and ice cream will be served following the program.
