Hope planning ‘Old Fashioned Independence Day’

HOPE — The town of Hope will bring back its Old Fashioned Independence Day from 6 to 10 p.m. July 2, capped off with fireworks at dusk.

The celebration is hosted by the Yellow Trail Museum in Hope, which is offering $1 ice cream floats all evening.

Crafts and food booths open at 6 p.m., with a parade of decorated bikes at 6:20 p.m.

The Bannister Family Band will perform at 6:30 p.m. with a Cake walk in the shelter house at 6:45 p.m.

Sack races are planned at 7:30 p.m. along with a watermelon eating contest, followed by tug-of-war at 7:45 p.m. A water balloon toss is planned at 8 p.m.

For the fireworks, organizers ask individuals to bring their own chairs or a blanket.

Entries are being accepted for Hope’s Little Miss Sparkler and Mr. Firecracker contest, which is open to Hope area children ages 3 to 10.

Entrants are asked to decorate a can and collect money to vote for the contestant, with each penny counting as one vote. All proceeds benefit the Yellow Trail Museum.

Donations (votes) must be turned in at the museum before June 30. If the museum is not open, they may be turned in to Jessica Brown at Deckard Tool, 624 Main St.

The winner will be announced at 5:30 p.m. during the Old Fashioned Fourth celebration.

There will also be a “Bake Your Best Apple Pie” contest, with a $25 grand prize and two other prizes of $15 and $10. Entries must be full size pies that will be cut and sold with homemade ice cream after the contest. Entries are due July 2 at the booth next to Kappa Kappa Sigma no later than 6:45 p.m. July 2. Judging begins at 7 p.m. and registration forms are available at the museum in advance or at the booth on July 2.
