Fire reported in grill at downtown diner

Columbus firefighters were sent to Jill’s Downtown Diner at 10:57 a.m. Wednesday after restaurant employees said a small fire occurred on the restaurant’s grill. The restaurant is located at 421 Seventh St.

When firefighters entered the building they found the fire had been extinguished by employees with a fire extinguisher located within the restaurant.

As firefighters inspected the grill area, the fire began to build once more from behind the grill top, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

Firefighters turned off the gas supply to the grill and used two additional fire extinguishers to fully extinguish the grease-fueled fire. Firefighters believe that an accumulation of grease was a contributing factor to the fire.

Damages were isolated to the grill area with no monetary value estimate provided before additional inspection to restaurant cooking hood system is completed, Wilson said.

No injuries were reported, Wilson said. The incident was reported to the Bartholomew County Department of Health, per department protocol, and the restaurant was closed Wednesday as damage was assessed.
