Columbus police officers arrested a local man on several felony charges in conjunction with a narcotics investigation.
CPD officers were sent at 2:40 p.m. Friday to a reported overdose in the 800 block of McClure Road. A search warrant for the residence was obtained and during the course of the investigation, officers established probable cause to arrest Michael E. Ames, 39, of 3345 Virginia St., said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.
A short time later, officers located Ames riding a bicycle near Seventh and Cherry streets. The officers attempted to stop Ames, however, he began fleeing on his bicycle, Harris said. While attempting to evade officers, Ames reportedly began discarding items he had in his clothing.
Moments later, Ames lost control of his bicycle and crashed. He was arrested a short time later, Harris said.
Ames was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for treatment and later remanded to the Bartholomew County Jail on the following preliminary charges:
- Dealing in methamphetamine (Level 2 felony)
- Possession of methamphetamine (Level 3 felony)
- Possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon (Level 4 felony)
- Possession of drug paraphernalia (Level 6 felony)
- Possession of a legend drug injection device (Level 6 felony)
- Visiting a common nuisance (Class A misdemeanor)
- Resisting law enforcement (Class A misdemeanor)
Ames was being held in the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $933,500 bond, jail officials said.
