Columbus North proved why it is one of the top teams in the state when they downed its crosstown rival Columbus East 5-0 in Tuesday night’s boys tennis dual match.
The fourth-ranked Bull Dogs didn’t drop a single game to the Olympians as a team in the match.
“We did well. Our goal going in was try to see what we could do without getting sloppy and not lose many games. Everybody did what they’re supposed to do,” North coach Kendal Hammel said. “They’re competition, they know what we needed to do with our level of play. We needed to play up at our level and not play down to their level in that situation. It’s just one match of the season.”
Hot and humid weather conditions were present during the match.
“I don’t think it affected anything. Everyone was hot. It didn’t affect anybody as far as cramping or feeling tired,” Hammel said. “If it’d had been tougher, tighter matches, more longer points, it might have made a difference down the road, but it didn’t in this situation.”
At No. 1 singles, Nathan Lin topped Derek Heideman 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Hank Lin downed Matthew Degner 6-0, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Anvay Atram defeated Brady Redelman 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 1 doubles, Matthew Liu and Amrit Kar won against Lincoln West and Henry Ulrich 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, Eric Stavnheim and Parth Shah defeated Jacob Dettmer and Tyler Ernst 6-0, 6-0.
“They played the best that they could. In some situations, there’s not a whole lot you can do. Some of it is just out of our control. That’s something I tell players all the time is that you try to control the things that you can control,” East coach Matt Malinsky said. “We put out a game plan, and some of the game plans were high risk, high reward, and some of them are just too much to ask in some situations to be able to execute over the course of a whole match.
“It turned out as advertised today. Hopefully, we can take some more experience over the rest of the season, and then come back and put up a little more of a fight when we see them again in a few weeks (in the sectional).”
