The Columbus Indiana Philharmonic will require its event attendees to wear masks amid the COVID-19 pandemic, leaders announced Monday afternoon.
And in some cases, such as with singer-actress Megan Hilty’s Cabaret at The Commons show slated Sept. 22, all attendees, including Philharmonic volunteers, must provide proof of vaccination at the request of the performer. Other future artists also may have the same request.
Philharmonic board president Melissa Fairbanks issued a statement in a news release.
“Music has the ability to heal, uplift, and connect us,” Fairbanks said. “The Philharmonic takes seriously the role of bringing the joy of music to our community. We are trying to do that in the safest way possible by complying with local policies.”
Policies include guidance and recommendations from the local COVID-19 task force, the Centers for Disease Control, and others.
Philharmonic leaders said anyone who is unable or unwilling to comply with the guidelines will be given a full refund for their ticket.
David Bowden, the philharmonic’s artistic director beginning his 35th and final season with the professional, award-winning ensemble, said after last week’s annual meeting that the organization would make whatever adjustments necessary to keep attendees, musicians and everyone else safe. He’s already looking forward to the season opener “Star Wars and Beyond” Sept. 18 at Judson Erne Auditorium, 1400 25th St.
“Live music is thrilling to experience,” Bowden said. “Just listening to the theme from ‘Star Wars’ raises the hair on the back of my neck.”
Bowden is quite familiar with the tune since the Philharmonic has played it regularly for its annual Adventure Concerts for years for area students.
The Philharmonic is recommending that prospective audience members stay home if:
They have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 10 days.
They are feeling unwell.
Are experiencing mild symptoms such as muscle aches, slight cough, sore throat and fatigue.
They are awaiting COVID-19 test results.
Are caring for someone who has a suspected or conformed case of COVID-19.
