Flames teams win tournament titles

Two Columbus Flames hockey teams came away with championships at the end of the season Buckeye Tournament last weekend.

Flames Peewee B beat Cincy Swords a5-2 and Athens 3-0, putting them in the championship game, where they downed Athens again 4-2 to bring home the league championship. Ayden Richardson netted five goals and one assist; Dana Thomas scored three goals; Colby Payne, Bryson Moore, Cooper Ross and Jonah Broderick all added one goal, Noah Doig, Preston Bell and Lilli Donica all had two assists and Gerrett Uy added one assist. Gabe Marsh was in net all weekend.

Flames Squirt A fell to Junior Fuel Black 3-1 before beating Findlay Tojans AA 5-2 and Columbus (Ohio) Blue Jackets AA 2-1 putting them into the championship, where they topped Indy Junior Fuel Black 1-0 on a goal in the first 8 seconds of the game for the AA lower championship. Maddox Coy netted three goals and one assist, Robby Orgass notched two goals and three assists, Max Perez and Thomas King each scored two goals and Carter Harris added one assist. Cayden Long was in net, saving 61 of 71 shots for a save percentage of 91%.

Columbus Flames Bantam A beat Indian Hill 4-2, tied Miami 2-2 in regular time before falling in the shootout, tied Louisville 3-3 before falling again in a shootout. Will Jamerson scored three goals; Eduardo Aranda netted one goal and three assists; River Degner had one goal and one assist; Carson King, Lance Kitterman, Tyler Teague and Westin Davis all scored one goal, Drew Weed had four assists and Leif Nelson and Cole Finney each added one assist. Jackson Wheatley was in net.

Columbus Flames squirt B beat Louisville 3-1 and Bloomington Blades 4-0 and fell to Dayton 2-0 before tying Bloomington Blades 3-3 and falling in a shootout in the semifinals. Thomas Degner scored four goals, Jonah Oliphant netted two goals and one assist, Carson Sims scored two goals, Graham Barnes had one goal and one assist, Declan McGurk scored one goal, Avery Orgass had 2 assists and Clare Neff added one assist. Degner scored two goals in the shootout, while Bloomington scored three goals in the shootout. Knox Coen was in net all weekend.

Columbus Flames Bantam B lost to Louisville 2-0 and West Virginia 7-0. Lane Barringer was in net.

Columbus Icemen played in the state playoffs and lost to Carroll 6-1 and tied Brebeuf 4-4 before falling in overtime to endi their season. Caleb McGhehey scored two goals, Nate Balasia and Alex Clark each netted one goal and one assist, Will Kushner scored one goal, Evan Federle had three assists and John Ferguson added two assists. Jake McMullen was in net.

SWIMMING

Club Olympia swimmers qualify

In anticipation of this weekend’s Indiana SE Divisionals and upcoming Indiana Age Group and Senior State Championship meets, Club Olympia recently competed in the “Last Chance” Qualifier meet hosted by the Flashes Aquatics Club at Franklin Central High School.

Club Olympia athletes swam 85 personal-record times in 142 events and achieved 14 new cuts for the Southeast Divisional Championships. Two first-time Divisional qualifiers were Aahan Gupta in the 10U 50-yard butterfly and Daxton Wolf in the 10U 200 freestyle.

New club members Jesse Isaacs and Keaton Stephenson joined Maddie Beyer by adding their first Divisional cuts. Isaacs made it in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, and Stephenson in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. They join fellow new club members Hannah Dean, Jasper Nickoll and Ali Trueblood, who are competing in relays in this weekend’s Divisionals at Center Grove.

Club athletes also adding Divisional cuts at Franklin Central were Ty Mayer in the 200 butterfly, Lily Pendleton in the 200 freestyle, Aksh Ranjan in the 100 breaststroke, Vivan Shah in the 50 breaststroke

and 100 backstroke and Cavan Stilson in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. In total, Club Olympia has 60 swimmers entered in the Divisional Championships, with 36 competing in both individual and relay events and 24 potentially competing on relays.

Eight club members will then compete in the Age Group State Championships for swimmers 12-and-under next weekend at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium, followed by the Senior State Championship

to be held March 17-20 in Elkhart, where Club Olympia will have 11 members competing in open events for athletes typically 15 years and older.

Two Club Olympia athletes have qualified and will compete in USA Swimming’s Central Zone’s Speedo Spring Sectional March 31-April 3 at the IU Natatorium.

BROOMBALL

Hansons, Monsters to meet for title

Top-seeded Hansons and second-seeded Monsters of Rock will play for the Columbus Broomball League title March 13 after both teams won their semifinal games last weekend.

Hansons beat fourth-seeded CCA 6-3. Matt Street netted two goals, and Max Warr, Dave VanValkenburg, Rahul Bhardwaj and Keith Henry all added one for Hansons. Greg Thomas, Todd Houchin and Shawn Bauman scored for CCA.

Monsters of Rock topped third-seeded Our Name is Earl 6-1 behind two goals each from Ben Eckhart and Rob Jones and one each from Kha Vu and Ryan Ingalls. Dani Kareus scored for Earl.

In the opening round earlier in the day, Earl slipped past sixth-seeded Jennings County BC 4-2. Darren Eckerly scored twice, and Noah Marsh had one goal for Earl. Kyle Hunterman had both goals for Jennings.

CCA blanked fifth-seeded Toyota Tsunamis 4-0. Thomas netted two goals, and Bauman and Scott Herron each added one.
