Clifford man accused of shooting gun at large fight

A Clifford man was arrested after officers received a report that a man discharged a gun during a large fight involving several juveniles near Pence Park on Friday evening.

At approximately 7 p.m., CPD officers responded to the 400 block of Pence Street in regards to the fight, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman. When officers arrived, they observed several people in the street near Pence Park.

The officers determined that prior to their arrival, a large fight involving several people occurred, Harris said. During the fight, officers were advised that John S. Koop, 33, of Clifford, retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and fired the gun once in the air. Koop was reportedly tackled by people who were at the scene of fight and the gun was secured in a nearby residence, Harris said.

Koop was placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail on a preliminary charge of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. He was being held in jail in lieu of $65,000 bond, jail officials said.
