COLUMBUS
William Michael “Mike” Collins, 72, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2022 at Silver Oaks Health Campus.
Mike was born on May 23, 1950 in Columbus to parents Dothal and Ruby Collins. Growing up in Columbus, he was a proud member of the East Columbus Safety Patrol. After graduating from Columbus High School, he began working at Cummins Engine Company. He married Sharon Patton in November of 1974 and they attended Columbus First Assembly for many years.
Mike was a 2nd Degree black belt in karate and was the owner and instructor of Columbus Karate Center. He enjoyed traveling and took several trips throughout the years visiting Spain, Japan, and frequently took trips to Siesta Key Beach, Florida. He was an avid fisherman, a talented woodworker, and loved spending time with his family.
Mike is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sharon; his daughter, Gretchen (Michael) Barnett; his grandchildren, Bryan Drake (Gretchen Fulz), Allison (Wyatt) Shannon, and Cynthia Barnett; his nephew, Travis (Renada) Pyatt; and great-niece and nephew, Josie and Carter. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Connie Pyatt.
A memorial service for Mike will be held Monday, October 17 at 6 p.m. at Myers-Reed Chapel with Pastor Rick Glowacki officiating. Friends may gather for visitation from 4 p.m. until the time of the service on Monday. Memorial donations in his name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
