COLUMBUS
Judith Brand Bates, 87, of Columbus, passed from this life at 8:10 p.m. Saturday, December 24, 2022, at the Columbus Regional Hospital Emergency Room.
She was born April 16, 1935, in Johnson County, the daughter of Paul and Mary Brand who died when Judy was three.
She then lived and was raised by her grandparents, John and Nora Brand.
Judy graduated from Mt. Auburn High School in Mt. Auburn, Indiana.
She received her bachelor’s degree from High Point University and a master’s degree from University of North Carolina.
She did advanced education studies at UNC Charlotte.
She worked in Davidson County, North Carolina as a teacher.
She then was an industrial education coordinator and counselor in Charlotte, NC.
A faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church, she enjoyed traveling, working with her dogs, family gatherings and was a published poet.
Survivors include her son, Gregory (Vicki) Bennett of Nashville, IN; grandchildren, Greg Bennett and Mike (Jessica) Bennett; four great-grandchildren; nephews, Russell (Cathy) Muldoon of Greenfield and Gary (Terri) Muldoon and her dog, Charlie.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Tommy Brand; sister, Glorianne Muldoon and her former husband, Dr. Jerry Bates.
The funeral will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. John Armstrong officiating.
A time of visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to time of service Thursday at the church.
She will be laid to rest at Garland Brook Cemetery.
