Letter: Will local Republicans at last distance selves from Trump?

From: Lee Shipman

As recommended by Special Counsel Jack Smith, I read the indictment against the former president and his aide Waltine Nauta. Before I go any further, no matter what your political persuasion, you should take the time to read the indictment. It is a very easy read, and is absent of any propaganda or political agenda. You can find it at justice.gov/storage/US_v_Trump-Nauta_23-80101.pdf. A thoughtful reading of this document should immunize oneself from the political propaganda being spewed by all sides of this issue.

I keep hearing from Republican leadership that the indictment is a political scheme against the leading opponent of the current president. It is important to note that all of the illegal activity and details about the ongoing investigation occurred long before the former president’s November 15, 2022, announcement of his 2024 presidential intentions.

Referring to the indictment, the criminal investigation was initiated on March 30, 2022. That is exactly 7.5 months prior to the former president’s November announcement. Does Republican leadership actually believe that once someone who is under criminal investigation announces a candidacy for political office that all ongoing criminal investigations should cease? Is there some kind of safe window where a candidate can commit crimes without fear of prosecution that I am unaware of?

Would all charges have been dropped if Indiana District 69 Rep. Jim Lucas swerved to miss a deer while driving under the influence resulting in him running into some guard rails, causing tens of thousands of dollars in property damage, followed by him leaving the scene of the accident had it occurred last year at this time?

It is obvious to anyone being honest that the former President’s announcement was done in the hopes of thwarting the ongoing investigation into his dealing with classified documents and current Republican leadership is doing nothing to convince him or the rest of his followers otherwise. Unfortunately, current Republican leadership is behaving as if running for office is somehow “base” in a grade-school recess game of criminal avoidance.

I have yet to hear any of my elected Republican leaders publicly speaking out against the former President’s big lie about the 2020 election or their disgust in his ongoing documented criminal behavior.

I write this during county fair season. Will the local Republican Party tent again this year have a shrine to the former president, or will they have the courage to publicly dissociate and distance themselves from the twice impeached, twice indicted former president? Why not focus on the local son who is also running for the highest office in the land for 2024?

I can only hope that this year you muster the courage to distance yourselves from the former president’s lies and propaganda, and start educating your constituents about the truth of the 2020 election, and the gravity of this current indictment. You are the only ones who can, and I hope you live up to your responsibility to do so. See you at the fair!
