Central Avenue closures end, other road work expected

Recent closures along Central Avenue should be over as of today, though other road closures are on the horizon.

According to City Engineer Andrew Beckort, contractors expected to finish with pavement crack repair, which was occurring on Central from 17th to 25th streets, on Friday.

“They had good weather and got the work done early,” he said.

Motorists can expect to see more road work this summer, as the Columbus Board of Works has approved a right-of-way request from Dave O’Mara Contractors for work on Indianapolis Road and County Road 100 North.

The work on Indianapolis Road will occur from the downtown roundabout to US 31, and the work on County Road 100 North will run from Indianapolis Road to Columbus city limits.

The board voted at a previous meeting to approve a nearly $1.5 million contract with Dave O’Mara Contractors for the project, which is being funded by a Community Crossings Matching Grant.

Beckort said in a previous interview that most of the funds will be spent on upgrading Old Indianapolis Road from the roundabout at the junction of Brown, Lindsey and 11th streets to Paula Drive, just south of the U.S. 31 overpass. Additionally, some funding will be used to put a new layer of asphalt on the roundabout.

The city also plans to do a full-depth reclamation (FDR) and overlay of County Road 100N, just off Old Indianapolis Road at the city limits, for about four-tenths of a mile, said Beckort.

The right-of-way request from Dave O’Mara Contractors runs from June 19 to August 31. Beckort said that contractors will be taking pavement samples from both roads during this coming week to finish the pavement design, and work on Indianapolis Road will not begin until after July 4. Cold in-place recycling, as well as the milling and resurfacing of the roundabout, is expected to occur in late July.

According to Beckort, traffic controls on Indianapolis Road will likely involve having a flagger direct motorists around lane closures.

In regard to County Road 100N, he said, “They will probably have it closed for a day or two while they actually do the FDR, and then it will be back open. But we’ll put out something, before they do that work, to let everybody know with a firm date.”

Contractors will also be widening the road by about a foot on each side, he added.
