CPD makes OWI arrest of wrong way driver

A Columbus man who police say drove the wrong way on a one-way street early Saturday morning was stopped and arrested on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

An off-duty Columbus police officer who was driving his assigned patrol observed a car traveling the wrong way on Second Street at about 5:20 a.m. Saturday morning and stopped the vehicle. The officer made contact with the driver, who was identified as Alamin A. Yusuf, 26, of Columbus.

The officer noted that he could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage on Yusuf’s breath while speaking with him. Yusuf later failed multiple field sobriety tests at the scene and was transported to the Columbus Police Department where he provided a breath sample of .173%, more than twice the legal limit for intoxication.

Yusuf was placed under arrest and remanded to the Bartholomew County Jail on a preliminary charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated with a BAC of .15% or greater.
