Brian’s Picks – Sept. 6

1) What’s better than a solo star Cabaret at the Commons performer? Well, duh. That would be two celebrated stars, and that’s precisely what kicks off the series’ new season for Broadway performers and others in the spotlight in downtown Columbus, courtesy of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic. Orfeh and Andy Karl kick off the schedule at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14. The bio notes refer to them as “one of Broadway’s favorite couples,” and lauds Orfeh’s powerhouse vocals especially. Their credits include “Saturday Night Fever” (her), “Pretty Woman the Musical” (both), “Legally Blonde: The Musical” (both), “Groundhog Day” (him), and “Wicked” (him). 2) If he’s told us here at the local paper once, he’s told us loads of times: bluegrass artist Ricky Skaggs loves coming to Brown County, where he has fond memories of playing longtime friend Bill Monroe’s Bean Blossom Festival for years. The magnificent mandolin player and vocalist still boasting golden pipes returns to the area with an 8 p.m. show with his Kentucky Thunder band Saturday at Brown County Music Center, 200 Maple Leaf Drive in Nashville. 3) If you’ve ever wondered why the free cultural performances at the annual Columbus Ganesh Festival draw some 800 people to The Commons in downtown Columbus, take a look for yourself from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 16. Dance, music and more spotlight culture from India — and build bridges with others here. Information: columbusganesh.com.
