The membership of the Columbus American Legion called an election for Oct. 10 so that the post, recently closed due to a lack of officers, could reopen.

Shirley Trapp of Fodrea Community School was one of 1,700 teachers nationwide chosen to receive the Teacher of the Year award from Walmart.

Sixteen cadets, three of them women, completed coursework and solved a staged “murder” during the two-month-long Columbus Police Cadet Academy designed to familiarize area youths with the duties and responsibilities of police and encourage development of future officers.
