Services and studies

Alongsider Church — Alongsider is a community of house churches coming together to worship as one body on the first and third Sundays monthly at 9:30 a.m. The church meets in the cafeteria at WD Richards Elementary School. Park in the back by the tennis courts and enter through door 24. On the second and fourth Sundays, house churches meet in homes across Columbus for a conversational study of the past sermon and deeper fellowship.

Asbury United Methodist Church — Asbury offers a traditional service at 8:45 a.m. and a contemporary service at 11 a.m. Nursery is available for both services. J.A.M. (children’s church) is offered only at the 11 a.m. service. Sunday school classes meet at 10 a.m. Asbury offers a variety of classes and group studies at various times during the week. Columbus Baptist Church — The church offers worship services on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. A teen service is offered at 6:30 p.m. Sunday school for all ages meets at 9:30 a.m.

Wednesday Bible study, Kids Club and teens meet at 6:30 p.m. There are various small group events weekly.

East Columbus Christian Church — East Columbus Christian Church is open for in-person worship on Sunday mornings with a blended worship service at 10 a.m. The church also has online worship available through Facebook and YouTube.

Sunday morning Bible study is at 9 a.m. Youth meet at the church from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and children’s ministry meets through Zoom on Wednesdays at 5 p.m.

East Columbus United Methodist Church — Sunday morning worship service begins at 9 a.m. The morning blended worship service includes praise music and traditional hymns. Children receive a special message during children’s moment and are dismissed for children’s church during the service. Sunday school begins at 10:10 a.m. with classes for all age groups. Holy Communion is served on the first Sunday of each month.

A free hot meal will be served the second Sunday of each month at 5 p.m. in the Youth Center Building. All are welcome to come.

Fairlawn Presbyterian Church — The church has in-person and Zoom services at 9:30 a.m. To join on Zoom, email the church office at [email protected] to request a Zoom link.

Fellowship and coffee hour is every Wednesday at 7 p.m. Contact the church for the Zoom link.

Women’s Bible study is the third Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m.

Faith Lutheran Church — Worship each Sunday begins at 9 a.m. in-person and livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page. Most Sundays, Sunday school and an adult Bible study are offered from 10:15 to 11 a.m. Wednesday evening worship is offered at 6:30 p.m. each week.

Preschool classes continue throughout the school year and the congregation offers an afterschool program each school day from 3 to 6 p.m. with busing from Southside Elementary.

First Presbyterian Church — As the church returns to known and new routines after an exciting summer, the passage Sunday returns to a central truth of God’s love: “God always seeks us out.” That is also Pastor Felipe Martinez’s sermon title, based on Matthew 18:10-14. The Sanctuary Choir will lead worship.

People in the community in need of a meal are invited to hot meals offered Fridays at 5 p.m. (Please enter through the glass doors on Franklin Street.) The church is LGBTQ-friendly, open and affirming to all.

First United Methodist Church — On Sunday, Sept. 24, at 10 a.m., the Rev. Howard Boles will deliver the message, “An EPIC Church: Every Person Is Connected to God.” The scripture will be Isaiah 43:1-5. The church encourages those attending in person to arrive 10 minutes before the service. Childcare will be available from 9:45 a.m. until the end of the 10 a.m. service. An adult Sunday school class and Sunday school for children ages 4-12 will start at 9 a.m.

For those unable to attend the in-person service or not yet comfortable meeting in person, service livestreams will be available on the church Facebook page and the church YouTube channel (FUMC Columbus). Videos will be available on the church website for later viewing as well.

On Friday, Sept. 29, the church will host a blood drive from noon to 5 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Go to redcrossblood.org to register to donate.

On Saturday, Oct. 7 at 10 a.m., the church will have its annual Blessing of the Animals. It will take place in the green space at the corner of Ninth and Lafayette St. Bring your furry, feathered, or four-legged friend to receive a blessing from the Rev. Howard Boles.

Garden City Christian Church — Sunday school classes are available for infants through adults at 9 a.m. Join the church for a blended worship service with lead pastor Brain Gilroy on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.

Nursery, preschool, and children’s church (K-fifth grade) are also offered at 10 a.m. Youth group (grades 6-12) meets weekly on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. with intern Josiah Been.

Grace Lutheran Church — The church hosts Sunday worship services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. in person and livestreamed at gracecolumbus.org. Sunday school for all ages is at 9:30 a.m.

On Saturday, Sept. 30, the Rev. Dr. Gregory Seltz of Lutheran Heritage will be speaking and will employ insights from the biblical book of Esther to our lives as citizens today. A potluck dinner will be at 5:30 p.m., the keynote will begin at 6:15 p.m., and questions and discussion will begin at 7:30 p.m. The evening is open to all in our community. Mt. Healthy Community Church — The church offers Sunday school weekly at 9:30 a.m. for folks of all ages. Worship service begins at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Jon Stone. Come to MHCC to receive God’s word, uplifting music and Christian fellowship. Everyone is welcome.

Mount Pleasant Christian Union Church — The church invites the community to visit the little 150-year-old country church for a 10:30 a.m. Sunday service. The church preaches out of the King James Bible and sings out of hymn books. The church’s doors are open for visitors as the church family looks to grow.

Newbern United Methodist Church — Sunday church service at 10:30 a.m. in-person and Bible study each Wednesday at 7 p.m. via Zoom.

Petersville United Methodist Church — Pastor Rebecca Milne will continue with her series of sermons, “Drop the Stones,” by titling her Sept. 24 sermon “Liberation through Forgiveness” at the 9 a.m. worship service. Scripture to be used include Philippians 1:1-13.

Kathy Bush will serve as song and worship leader and Teresa Covert will give the children’s message.

A time of refreshment and fellowship will follow the service.

The Chosen study will continue at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday evening led by Pastor Milne.

On Sunday, Oct. 1, there will be a 5 p.m. Worship Service at Clifty Park; it will be a combined service with First Lutheran Church, Sandy Hook UMC, and Petersville UMC.

Sandy Hook United Methodist Church — Sandy Hook United Methodist Church gathers weekly for in-person and online worship. The church will offer one combined service at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24. Pastor Paul Dazet will bring a message about “Liberation Through Frogiveness” as part of the sermon series, “Drop the Stones!”

Sunday school is offered for all ages now from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Nursery is available for children 3 and younger from 9:30 a.m. through the end of the service.

Family Movie Night will be Saturday, Sept. 30 at dusk. Bring lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy popcorn and watch “Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse”.

St. Paul Episcopal Church — St. Paul’s is an inclusive faith community of the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis. The church meets in person or by livestream at the church’s website, stpaulscolumbus.org.

St. Paul Lutheran Church — Festival Divine Services will be held Sunday at 8 and 10:45 a.m. celebrating the 175th Anniversary of the congregation. Dr. Richard Stuckwisch, Indiana District President, will present the message, “Salvation Has Come to This House” based on Luke 19:1-10.

Brunch will be served outdoors between services. Congregational History and Memories Book will be available for $10. Christian Education classes will not meet.

Pastor Dan Fickenscher will lead the Spanish worship service in the church at 1 p.m.

Radio worship service is every Sunday at 9:30 a.m., and The Lutheran Hour is every Sunday at 7 p.m., both on WYGS 91.1 FM.

Annual Harvest Fest will be Sunday, Sept. 24, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Schroer Ranch located 9846 E. County Road 50N, Columbus. Activities include games and hayride. A hymn sing and youth-led devotions will precede the 5:30 pitch-in meal. Meat, drinks and table service will be provided. A Bible class for women entitled, “Walking Away from Anxiety and into God’s Word” led by Mackenzie Wint meets Tuesday, Sept. 26 in the Fellowship Room at 7 p.m.

Wednesday adult Bible classes meet in the fellowship room at 9 a.m. studying the Book of Acts, and at 6 p.m. studying First and Second Peter.

A Euchre Tournament and Game Night will be held Friday, Sept. 29 in the Fellowship Room beginning at 6 p.m. Free-will offering will support Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch.

Events

East Columbus United Methodist Church — Grace’s Table is a free meal available for anyone to attend. The meal is every second Sunday of the month at 5 p.m. inside the Youth Center Building adjacent to the main church building.

Freetown Church of Christ — Freetown Church of Christ is so excited to announce “Seniors Day” 2023 on Thursday, Oct. 6. Seniors Day 2023 promises to be filled with singing, preaching, fellowship, great food, rekindling of old friendships, making new friends and so much more.

Registration with donuts and coffee begins at 8:30 a.m. The day will end by 3 p.m. The cost, which covers the catered lunch by The Pines, will be $15.

The theme for the day will be “God and Country” with a focus on the father, son and holy ghost, the freedoms we share here in America, and the freedom we have in Christ!

Some who will be helping lead the day include J.D. Miller as pianist and storyteller, Bryan and Yvonne Hutson of Rescue Me Ministries, Jim Hutson, The Dave Melton Family (a family singing group based out of Columbus), Ron Bridgewater, Minister at East Columbus Christian Church, Calib Smith, Betty Gray of Encourage Me Ministries, and Barry DeWitt, minister at Freetown Church of Christ.

Northview Church — “The Storehouse” exists to serve those in need who may find themselves recovering from a situation such as a fire, elderly on fixed income, single parents, sickness, homelessness, incarceration, etc. Clothing and household goods are provided free.

Second Baptist Church — Second Baptist Church is hosting a Women’s Tea on Oct. 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. The Women’s Tea is set to be an engaging and uplifting experience for women of all ages, backgrounds and faiths. Attendees can look forward to an afternoon of heartfelt conversations, inspiring discussions, and a warm cup of tea. The event will feature guest speakers, interactive sessions, and an opportunity for attendees to connect and forge meaningful relationships. Tickets for the Women’s Tea are $16 and are currently available for purchase.

South Central Indiana Christian Men’s Fellowship — United Christian Church will host Tuesday, Sept. 26’s meeting, the fourth Tuesday of the month.

Meal is at 6:30 p.m. including fried chicken, cheesy potatoes, green beans, rolls, desserts, tea and lemonade. Meeting will begin at 7:15 p.m. with music by Maddy Marling and Greg Shuler, who was Youth Pastor of Elevation Church Ministries, as speaker.
