IUPUC to present ‘Let Freedom Read: Teaching with Banned Books’

IUPUC soon will become IU Columbus.

COLUMBUS, Ind. — The University Library of Columbus and the IU Columbus Division of Education is hosting a panel discussion with teachers about challenged books as part of Banned Books Week. The annual event takes place Oct. 2, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., in the Summerville Room of the Columbus Learning Center.

This year’s panel features educators who have incorporated books that have faced challenges into their classrooms. Panelists will share firsthand anecdotes from their classrooms, shedding light on the impactful conversations that are taking place. Panelists will also discuss how they leverage challenging and challenged books to foster a sense of community, enhance understanding of the wider world, explore history, and promote effective reading instruction.

“Banned books have been a hot-button issue in Columbus this year but not much of the public discourse has included the voices of our dedicated teachers,” noted Emily Dill, executive director for the University Library of Columbus. “We are pleased to amplify the voices of educators, and we especially hope that Columbus-area students and teachers will join us for this event.”

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

IUPUC is transitioning to Indiana University Columbus by July 1, 2024. For more information, go to www.iupuc.edu.
