College sports notebook: Huffman scores twice in Hanover win

HANOVER — Blake Huffman caught a touchdown pass and ran for another score in the fourth quarter Saturday to help Hanover pull away for a 38-14 win against Trine.

Huffman, a junior from Columbus North, caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Kolton Richards and ran 25 yards for the final score of the game. He finished with 16 carries for 76 yards and three catches for 48 yards.

The Panthers (3-0) host Defiance on Saturday.

Kiesler helps Boise to fifth-place finish

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. — Julia Kiesler finished 20th to help the Boise State women’s cross-country team to a fifth-place finish Friday in Minnesota’s Roy Girak Invitational.

Kiesler, a freshman from Columbus North, was the No. 4 runner for the Broncos. She ran 21 minutes, 47.0 seconds for 6K (3.8 miles).

Newells compete for Midshipmen

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Matt Newell finished 175th to help the Navy men’s cross-country team to a 19th-place finish in Saturday’s Virginia College and Open Invitational.

Newell, a sophomore from Columbus North, was the Midshipmen’s No. 7 runner. He ran in 25:09.4 for 8K (5 miles).

Newell’s sister, Navy freshman Brianna Newell, ran as an individual in the women’s 5K (3.1-mile) race and finished 186th in 19:04.8.

Sabotin helps lead UIndy to win

INDIANAPOLIS — Hannah Sabotin recorded nine kills, five blocks and two aces Saturday to help lead University of Indianapolis to its eighth consecutive win, a 25-14, 25-18, 25-15 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory against Drury.

On Friday, Sabotin, a senior Columbus resident who played at Trinity Lutheran, posted 10 kills and two blocks in a 25-20, 25-13, 25-23 GLVC win against Southwest Baptist.

Sabotin leads the nation in Division II with a .502 hitting percentage. She is second in all divisions combined.

The Greyhounds (12-2, 2-0) travel to Missouri to visit Rockhurst on Friday and William Jewell on Saturday.
