College sports notebook: Kiesler named Mountain West Freshman of the Week

BOISE, Idaho — Boise State’s Julia Kiesler was named last week’s Mountain West Cross Country Women’s Freshman of the Week.

The Columbus North graduate had finished 20th in 21 minutes, 47 seconds for 6K (3.8 miles) Sept. 22 in Minnesota’s Roy Griak Invitational. She was the top Mountain West freshman at the meet.

The Broncos will finish the regular season Oct. 13 at Wisconsin’s Nuttycombe Invitational.

Lang nets goals in Michigan tie, win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Jenna Lang scored her second goal of the season Thursday to give 22nd-ranked Michigan a 1-1 Big Ten Conference women’s soccer tie with No. 4 Penn State.

Lang, a sophomore from Columbus North, added her third goal of the season on Sunday to help the Wolverines to a 4-0 Big Ten win against Maryland.

Michigan (7-2-3, 3-1-1) hosts Michigan State on Saturday.

Barnett helps Bisons to 4th-place finish

CHICAGO — Mackenzie Barnett finished 37th in a personal-best 20:38.99 for 6K (3.8) miles to help Lipscomb women’s cross-country to a fourth-place finish in Friday’s Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational.

Barnett, a junior from Columbus North, was the No. 5 runner for the Bisons.

Lipscomb will compete in Evansville’s Angel Mounds Invite and Wisconsin’s Nuttycombe Invite on Oct. 13.

Newell leads Navy runners in open race

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Matt Newell led a contingent of Navy cross-country runners in the men’s open race at Saturday’s Paul Short Invitational.

Newell, a sophomore from Columbus North, finished in 25:36.6 for 8K (5 miles).

Newell’s sister, Midshipmen freshman Brianna Newell, finished 18th in the women’s open race in 22:48.4 for 6K: (3.8 miles).

Navy’s men and women will compete in the Army-Navy Star meet on Oct. 14 at Army.

Sabotin leads UIndy to victory

Hannah Sabotin led University of Indianapolis with 18 kills, two blocks and one ace Saturday in a four-set Great Lakes Valley Conference volleyball win at William Jewell.

Sabotin, a senior Columbus resident who played high school volleyball at Trinity Lutheran, led the Greyhounds with 19 kills and an ace and had four blocks in Friday’s five set GLVC loss at Rockhurst.

UIndy (13-3, 3-1) hosts Missouri-St. Louis on Friday and McKendree on Saturday.

Bennett helps Marian post wins

Sarah Bennett recorded four kills and one block assist Friday to help Marian to a four-set Crossroads League volleyball win against Taylor.

Bennett, a sophomore from Columbus North, added one kill and three digs Saturday to help the Knights to a four-set Crossroads League win at Spring Arbor.

Marian (14-6, 8-2) plays at No. 19 Mount Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday.
