Services and studies

Alongsider Church — Alongsider is a community of house churches coming together to worship as one body on the first and third Sundays monthly at 9:30 a.m. The church meets in the cafeteria at WD Richards Elementary School. Park in the back by the tennis courts and enter through door 24. On the second and fourth Sundays, house churches meet in homes across Columbus for a conversational study of the past sermon and deeper fellowship.

Asbury United Methodist Church — Asbury offers a traditional service at 8:45 a.m. and a contemporary service at 11 a.m. Nursery is available for both services. J.A.M. (children’s church) is offered only at the 11 a.m. service. Sunday school classes meet at 10 a.m. Asbury offers a variety of classes and group studies at various times during the week. Come participate in making homemade donuts between services on Sunday, Oct. 29. Have fun decorating your donuts with your favorite toppings and enjoying a cup of refreshing cider.

Columbus Baptist Church — The church offers worship services on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. A teen service is offered at 6:30 p.m. Sunday school for all ages meets at 9:30 a.m.

Wednesday Bible study, Kids Club and teens meet at 6:30 p.m. There are various small group events weekly.

East Columbus Christian Church — East Columbus Christian Church is open for in-person worship on Sunday mornings with a blended worship service at 10 a.m. The church also has online worship available through Facebook and YouTube.

Sunday morning Bible study is at 9 a.m. Youth meet at the church from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and children’s ministry meets through Zoom on Wednesdays at 5 p.m.

East Columbus United Methodist Church — Sunday morning worship service begins at 9 a.m. The morning blended worship service includes praise music and traditional hymns. Children receive a special message during children’s moment and are dismissed for children’s church during the service. Sunday school begins at 10:10 a.m. with classes for all age groups. Holy Communion is served on the first Sunday of each month.

A free hot meal will be served the second Sunday of each month at 5 p.m. in the Youth Center Building. All are welcome.

Fairlawn Presbyterian Church — The church has in-person and Zoom services at 9:30 a.m. To join on Zoom, email the church office at [email protected] to request a Zoom link.

Fellowship and coffee hour is every Wednesday at 7 p.m. Contact the church for the Zoom link.

Women’s Bible study is the third Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m.

Faith Lutheran Church — Worship each Sunday begins at 9 a.m. in person and livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page. Most Sundays, Sunday school and an adult Bible study are offered from 10:15 to 11 a.m. Wednesday evening worship is offered at 6:30 p.m. each week.

Preschool classes continue throughout the school year and the congregation offers an afterschool program each school day from 3 to 6 p.m. with busing from Southside Elementary.

First Lutheran Church — On Saturday, Oct. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m., the congregation will be hosting NeighborFest. There will be pumpkins, crafts, food and music. All events are free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome to attend.

First Presbyterian Church — On Oct. 22, the Scripture will be Matthew 5:38-42, which is part of the Sermon on the Mount. People in the community in need of a meal are invited to hot meals offered Fridays at 5 p.m. (Please enter through the glass doors on Franklin Street.) The church is LGBTQ-friendly, open and affirming to all.

First United Methodist Church — On Sunday, Oct. 22, at 10 a.m., the Rev. Howard Boles will deliver the message, “An EPIC Church: Every Person Is Connected in Giving.” The scripture will be John 13:1-5. The church encourages those attending in person to arrive 10 minutes before the service. Child care will be available from 9:45 a.m. until the end of the 10 a.m. service. Sunday school for children ages 4-12 will start at 9 a.m.

For those unable to attend the in-person service or not yet comfortable meeting in person, service livestreams will be available on the church Facebook page and the church YouTube channel (FUMC Columbus). Videos will be available on the church website for later viewing as well.

Garden City Christian Church — Sunday school classes are available for infants through adults at 9 a.m. Join the church for a blended worship service with lead pastor Brain Gilroy on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.

Mount Pleasant Christian Union Church — The church invites the community to visit the little 150-year-old country church for a 10:30 a.m. Sunday service. The church preaches out of the King James Bible and sings out of hymn books. The church’s doors are open for visitors as the church family looks to grow.

Petersville United Methodist Church — Pastor Rebecca Milne will continue her sermon series from Ruth on Sunday, Oct. 22, at the 9 a.m. worship service. Scriptures will be from Ruth 4:1-9, and the pastor will share that Boaz’s redemption of Ruth shows us the willingness of Jesus to redeem and embrace each of us just as we are.

Kathy Bush will serve as song and worship leader and Teresa Covert will present the children’s message. The service can be found on Facebook each week.

A time of refreshment and fellowship will follow the service.

“The Chosen” study group will continue each Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. A portion of the movie is viewed, and then Pastor Milne leads discussion; persons are invited to attend anytime.

On Oct. 25 at 4 p.m., the annual Charge Conference will be held at Asbury UMC; this is the year-end business meeting of our church and the Southeast District. All church members are encouraged to attend.

The Clay Township Fire Department will hold a Fish Fry on Oct. 27 and 28, and welcomes desserts from the Petersville church; the items may be dropped off at the Fire Station during the hours of the Fish Fry.

Petersville UMC will host its annual “Trunk or Treat” on Saturday night, Oct. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Sandy Hook United Methodist Church — Sandy Hook United Methodist Church gathers weekly for in-person and online worship. The church will offer one combined service at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22. The Rev. Beverly Perry will bring a message about “Episode 3 — Boaz” as part of the sermon series, “The Book of Ruth.”

Sunday school is offered for all ages from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Nursery is available for children 3 and younger from 9:30 a.m. through the end of the service.

A family movie night will be tonight, Saturday, Oct. 21, at dusk. Bring lawn chairs or blankets, enjoy popcorn and watch “Ron’s Gone Wrong.”

A spaghetti luncheon will raise funds for More than a Meal Ministry, which delivers Thanksgiving meals to the Columbus community. The luncheon will be immediatley following service in the fellowship hall. Donations for the meal will be accepted.

Trunk or Treat will be in the church parking lot on Tuesday, Oct. 31, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Those with a trunk and interested in passing out candy can call the church office at 812-372-8495.

St. Paul Lutheran Church — As part of the 175th Anniversary, Pastor Matt Jung will be guest preacher Sunday as the congregation celebrates its rich heritage of Christian Education at the 8 and 10:45 a.m. services. Youth choirs will sing at both services with preschool and kindergarten (ECM) children singing at the 10:45 a.m. service.

Christian Fellowship begins at 9:10 a.m. with Christian education classes for all ages beginning at 9:30 a.m. During the adult Bible hour, Deaconess Taylor Fickenscher will lead a class entitled, “The Faith in Art” in the conference room, and Pastor Doug Bauman will lead a discussion “Connected to Christ in Worship” in the fellowship room. Senior youth will study “God’s Plan for Your Life” led by Dave and Jen Probst. Pastor Dan Fickenscher will lead the Spanish worship service in the fellowship room at 10:45 a.m. followed by Spanish Bible study at 12:15 p.m. Lunch will be served, followed with child-friendly activities and ECM Open House.

Radio worship service is every Sunday at 9:30 a.m., and “The Lutheran Hour” is every Sunday at 7 p.m., both on WYGS 91.1 FM.

Wednesday adult Bible classes meet in the fellowship room at 9 a.m. studying the Book of Acts, and at 6 p.m. studying First and Second Peter.

A Bible class for women, “Loving God More Than Anything Else”, led by Mackenzie Wint, meets Thursday, Oct. 26, in the Fellowship Room at 7 p.m.

Freetown Church of Christ — Freetown Church will host “Seniors Day” 2023 on Thursday, Oct. 26. Seniors Day 2023 promises to be filled with singing, preaching, fellowship, great food, rekindling of old friendships, making new friends and so much more.

Registration with donuts and coffee begins at 8:30 a.m. The day will end by 3 p.m. The cost, which covers the catered lunch by The Pines, will be $15.

The theme for the day will be “God and Country” with a focus on the father, son and holy ghost, the freedoms we share here in America, and the freedom we have in Christ.

Some who will be helping lead the day include J.D. Miller as pianist and storyteller, Bryan and Yvonne Hutson of Rescue Me Ministries, Jim Hutson, The Dave Melton Family (a family singing group based in Columbus), Ron Bridgewater, minister at East Columbus Christian Church, Calib Smith, Betty Gray of Encourage Me Ministries, and Barry DeWitt, minister at Freetown Church of Christ.

Northview Church — “The Storehouse” exists to serve those in need who may find themselves recovering from a situation such as a fire, elderly on fixed income, single parents, sickness, homelessness, incarceration, etc. Clothing and household goods are provided free.

South Central Indiana Christian Men’s Fellowship — Hartsville Christian Church will host the Men’s Fellowship meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 24. Meal will be at 6:30 p.m. and include chili, grilled hotdogs, desserts, and drinks.
