College sports notebook: Gilley returns to starting lineup for Sycamores

Cadence Gilley recorded five digs, one assist and one ace for Indiana State Saturday in a three-set Missouri Valley Conference volleyball loss at Illinois State.

Gilley, a sophomore from Columbus East, had two digs in Friday’s three-set loss at Bradley in her return to the starting lineup.

The Sycamores (3-18, 1-10) will host Southern Illinois on Friday and Missouri State on Saturday.

Sabotin leads UIndy in defeat

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — Hannah Sabotin led University of Indianapolis with nine kills and three blocks Saturday in a four-set Great Lakes Valley Conference volleyball loss at Lewis.

Sabotin, a senior Columbus resident and Trinity Lutheran graduate, hit .444 for the match and is among the nation’s leaders in Division II in hitting percentage.

The Greyhounds (15-7, 4-3) will play at Missouri S&T on Friday.

Bennett’s kill caps Marian win

INDIANAPOLIS — Sarah Bennett recorded the final kill of the match Saturday to finish off Marian’s three-set Crossroads League volleyball win against St. Francis.

Bennett, a sophomore from Columbus North, also had one kill in Wednesday’s four-set win against Goshen.

The Knights (17-8, 11-4) visit Bethel on Wednesday and host Indiana Wesleyan on Friday, then wrap up the regular season Saturday at Taylor.

Barker scores in Franklin victory

FRANKLIN — Lauren Barker scored the game-winning goal Sunday in Franklin’s 2-1 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer victory against Earlham.

Barker, a freshman from Columbus North, is tied for the team lead with four goals and leads the Grizzlies with 10 points.

Franklin (4-7-6, 3-3-2), which clinched a spot in the HCAC Tournament, closes the regular season Wednesday at home against Transylvania.

Iorio posts shutout for Oberlin

Colvin Iorio posted a shutout with three saves in Oberlin’s 3-0 North Coast Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory against Hiram on Wednesday.

Iorio, a junior from Columbus North, had eight saves in Saturday’s 2-2 tie against Wittenberg.

The Yeomen (3-6-6, 1-2-3) play at Kenyon on Tuesday and close the regular season Saturday at Wabash.

Collier catches pair of passes for CMU

MUNCIE — Mitchel Collier caught two passes for 13 yards Saturday in Central Michigan’s 24-17 Mid-American Conference football loss at Ball State.

Collier, a redshirt sophomore tight end from Columbus North, has six catches for 48 yards this season.

The Chippewas (4-4, 2-2) will host Northern Illinois on Oct. 31.

Barnett leads Bisons at Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. — Mackenzie Barnett finished 53rd to lead the Lipscomb women’s cross-country team to a 10th-place finish Oct. 14 in Wisconsin’s Nuttycombe Invitational.

Barnett, a sophomore from Columbus North, ran 20 minutes, 45.8 seconds for 6K (3.8 miles). She was the Bisons’ No. 1 runner.

Lipscomb will host the ASUN Championships on Saturday.

Former Cougars to run in HCAC meet

Four South Decatur graduates will compete in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship Saturday at Blue River Park in Shelbyville.

Rose-Hulman freshman Chase Kalli, Franklin sophomore Trevor Newby and Manchester sophomore Bradley Walling will run in the men’s race. Anderson senior Sierra Kalli will compete in the women’s race.

The men’s race starts at Noon, and the women will follow at 1 p.m.
