Local man arrested on multiple preliminary charges after accused of attempting to punch a CRH police officer

COLUMBUS, Ind. — A local man was arrested on multiple preliminary charges after he was accused of attempting to punch a Columbus Regional Hospital police officer after being taken to the hospital for a blood draw.

Bartholomew County Sheriff Deputy Max Medina conducted a traffice stop at 11:13 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of North Marr Road and 29th Street, said Sgt. Dane Duke, sheriff department spokesman.

The vehicle was observed failing to maintain its lane and going over of the center line, Duke said. The driver of the vehicle, Travis McCarty, 34, of 3673 N. Marr Road, Columbus, displayed signs of intoxication and was subsequently arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, Duke said.

McCarty was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for a blood draw for the DUI
investigation. While at the hospital McCarty attempted to punch a Columbus Regional Hospital police officer which resulted in a physical altercation, Duke said. During the altercation, one law enforcement officer was injured in the face area and was treated at CRH. Also during the altercation one of the officers involved felt McCarty pulling at his holstered service weapon, Duke said.

McCarty was later transported to the Bartholomew County Jail on the following charges:

— Operating a vehicle while intoxicated

— Battery on a public safety official

— Resisting law enforcement

— Attempting to disarm a law enforcement officer.

McCarty remains in custody at the jail on a 48-hour hold, jail officials said.
