HOPE — It was a tale of two halves for the Hauser girls basketball team against Milan Thursday night.

A better second half couldn’t make up for the extremely slow start in the first half by the Jets. Turnovers and missed free throws in that first half cost them in a 47-32 loss.

“Those are our two key things we talked about every single night, and it came back to haunt us in the first half. We couldn’t get going,” Hauser coach Kyle Shipp said. “I was proud of our effort in the second half. We’ve just got to keep learning each game.”

It was tough for the Jets (0-3) to contain the Indians duo of Emma Ross and Kaiya Rinear. They combined scoring 34 of 47 total points for Milan (1-3).

“Those were the two we wanted to stop no matter what. We’ve got to continue to work on defense. We’ve got to continue to keep on doing all the little things,” Shipp said. “We’ve got to get better. We’ve got to keep getting better.”

Hauser was led by Norah Berkenstock with a team-high 16 points. Bella Kilps had eight, and Erykah Everroad added six.

With the Jets having almost an entirely new varsity team, it’s going to take some time to get the team chemistry rolling.

“We basically lost everybody from last year’s team, except for Norah and Erykah and Bella returning, but everybody is playing in a new role,” Shipp said. “For these first three games, you can see us have some flashes, but again, everybody in that new role is trying to get comfortable in being able to play off one another. We’ll get better and better. Our best basketball is ahead of us.”

Hauser will look for it first win of the season when they travel to Medora on Tuesday.
