Lancers fall to Austin in third-place game

EDINBURGH — For the second night in a row, Edinburgh got off to a slow start in its tournament, and once again, that led to a lopsided defeat.

Austin jumped out to a 23-3 lead early in the second quarter Thursday and went on to post a 76-48 victory in the third-place game of the Edinburgh Tournament.

The Lancers, who had routed Victory College Prep in the first round on Wednesday, fell behind early to Jac-Cen-Del in Wednesday night’s semifinals.

“It’s tough to rebound from,” Edinburgh coach Devin Burton said. “Wednesday night, we dug ourselves a hole early. (Thursday), We got some good looks early in the game, and they just didn’t go in, and you have to give credit to Austin. They came down and hit some shots. They made shots, and we didn’t, and when we’re not seeing the ball go in the hole, we have problems at the defensive end sometimes.”

Connor Ramey led the Lancers (6-5) with 11 points. Bailey Totten scored nine, and Rylan Londeree added eight.

Edinburgh now has eight days off before hosting South Decatur on Jan. 6 and then Greenwood in the first round of the Johnson County Tournament on Jan. 9.

“It’s not going to get any easier,” Burton said. “We have a tough team in South Decatur. We have a week of practice where we really need to get back to the grind and find ourselves because we have tough games here in South Decatur and Greenwood coming our way. Our schedule is not lightening up, so we have to be ready for a couple more tough ones.”
