Letter: Columbus should act today to help homeless people

From: Paul Davis

Columbus

I lost my home. I have nothing but the clothes on my back and an old backpack.

A park bench is a welcome sight when I’m tired. The leeward side of a shelter when the wind blows, and a roof when it rains provides some comfort.

A tent where I can be sheltered and keep my backpack safe from the elements provides some relief.

If I know that I’m not going to be harassed and driven out with what little I have, I am thankful.

That’s not me. He was my neighbor. What happened? Was it his fault? All?

What can be done now for the homeless?

Designated areas can be provided in our parks where year-round camping is available. Possibly even with a shelter house, fire pits, trash pick-up and bath facilities. The areas would have normal rules for safety and cleanliness and a maintenance charge.

The maintenance charge could be paid through donations from individuals and organizations when needed with eviction only for rule violation.

Maybe even private untillable or forested land could be made available. It could help pay the property taxes or more.

Maybe even minimal housing could be included.

My hometown, Columbus, can include a neighborhood where all types of safe, clean and healthy shelters are welcomed. Where all persons are truly neighbors.

Maybe someday? The need is today.
