Indiana History Center offers free admission on MLK day

INDIANAPOLIS — In honor of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s service to communities, the Indiana Historical Society is celebrating the late King’s birthday through music and story as part of a daylong celebration on Monday.

Guests are invited to enjoy free admission and special programs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, located at 450 W. Ohio St. in downtown Indianapolis. Special programming concludes at 4 p.m., but society exhibits remain open until 5 p.m.

Visitors are invited to spend the day at the venue and be inspired to be their best self by focusing on service to one another and our communities. Society organizers and promoters aim that visitors “be uplifted and encouraged by storytelling and music,” according to a news release.

People can add their own commitment to “Be the Change” to a growing mural, and reflect on all the big and little things they can do to improve the world around them.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

  • 10 a.m.-4 p.m.: Activities and donations.
  • 10:30-11:30 a.m.: Storytime.
  • 2-4 p.m.: Concert with Keisha Ballinger and the University United Methodist Church Praise Team

In addition, guests are encouraged to continue the legacy of King by supporting organizations like Charity Cares Clothing Closet. Those who would like to donate to Charity Cares Clothing Closet can bring in brand-new socks or underwear of all kids sizes or contribute with a financial donation directly to Charity Cares.

The society’s King Day celebration is presented by The Charlitta and Robin Winston Family Fund for African American History, with support from Charity Cares and University United Methodist Church.
