A North Vernon woman was rescued from a flooded car Saturday, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department reported.
The department’s 911 Center received an emergency call at 5:21 p.m. Saturday from a female stating her vehicle was in flood waters, and she was trapped in the vehicle with water coming in.
Dispatchers were able to determine the woman was in the 9000 block East of County Road 50N, The Chestnut Ridge Bottoms. Dispatchers advised the woman, later identified as Jennifer Colvin of North Vernon, was trapped in the vehicle and the water was rising in the vehicle at a very fast rate.
Deputy Mark Holt, who was off duty at the time, was in the area of County Road 50 N and US Hwy 31 at the time of the dispatch. Holt responded to the scene where he located the 2019 Honda CRV on the north side of the road with the water rising over the hood of the vehicle. Colvin was still trapped inside with water up to her neck.
Without hesitation, Holt entered the water and was able to get Colvin out of the vehicle and placed in his patrol vehicle to get her warm, the sheriff’s department said. Colvin was then transported to Schneck Medical Center by Deputy Holt, other deputies as well as the Seymour Police Department, which assisted with blocking intersections and escorting Holt and Colvin to the Hospital. Colvin was treated for possible hypothermia.
“Deputy Holt’s quick response kept this incident from being a lot worse,” said
Sheriff Rick Meyer. Holt was assisted by deputies Kevin Settle, Aaron Wilkins,
Reserve Deputy Michael Maxie, Crothersville Assistant Chief Jonathon Tabor and
Crothersville Reserve Deputy Derek Minton. Vernon Township Fire Department also
responded to the scene.
