Candidate filings: Lucas facing primary challenge, Speedy files for 6th Congressional District

Candidate filings have continued, with another incumbent representing part of Bartholomew County officially facing a primary challenge, according to the most updated information from the Indiana Election Division.

Brownstown teacher Brian Savilla has filed to challenge state Rep. Jim Lucas, R-Seymour, for the Republican nomination for Indiana House District 69.

Savilla is a history and government teacher at Brownstown Central High School and former member of the West Virginia House of Delegates.

Lucas recently completed probation after pleading guilty to charges that he crashed his vehicle through an interstate guardrail while under the influence of alcohol and then fled the scene.

State Rep. Mike Speedy, R-Indianapolis, has filed paperwork to run for the Republican nomination for Indiana’s 6th Congressional District in this year’s election. The district includes parts of Bartholomew, Johnson, Shelby and Hancock counties and southern portions of Indianapolis.

The U.S. House seat is open this year after incumbent Rep. Greg Pence, R-Ind., announced last week that he will not seek another term in Congress.

Speedy is a real estate investor and currently represents Indiana House District 90, which covers a southeastern slice of Indianapolis.

Valerie McCray has filed to run for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat that is currently held by Republican Mike Braun.

Braun has said he will not seek another term in the Senate to run for Indiana governor.

Candidate filing ends Feb. 9, according to the Indiana Election Division. Indiana’s primary will be held May 7.
