Prep sports notebook: Jennings girls hoops continues to make history

The Jennings County girls basketball team continues to have a historic season.

With their win against East on Thursday, the Panthers clinched their first outright girls basketball Hoosier Hills Conference title since the 2001-02 season.

Jennings currently sits 19-3, tying for most wins in a season since the 2001-02 season, when they were 19-3, as well.

The Panthers have a very good shot next week at ripping away the sectional title from 12-time defending sectional champion and reigning Class 4A state champ Bedford North Lawrence in the Floyd Central Sectional next week. Jennings beat the Stars 58-41 in a Jan. 3 contest earlier in the season. For the last five years, the Panthers have been knocked out by BNL in the sectional.

Jennings senior awarded by NBA

With Indianapolis hosting the NBA All-Star game next month, the host committee selected Jennings County girls basketball senior Alexis Carson as one of 24 Indiana high schoolers nominated because of their work off the court.

Carson is a volunteer firefighter for the Westport and Letts departments in Decatur County. She also received a $2,400 scholarship from the committee toward any college she plans to attend next year.
